I am a PR and love my trade. Nevertheless PR requires a reality check. We're about helping clients speak honestly, even robustly. People who run things have a lot of explaining to do in the next few years, so PR is crucial. I want a lively debate and I hope you’ll make it so.

Love the rant! Let David and David join the exclusive club of rich gents who need to reduce their bank balances by a few million through ownership of a footie club.

Like you mention, the fans won't care as long as the money's there and the club is doing OK. And what's so wrong with Mr Sullivan wanting to pimp up his image a bit?

Maybe I missed it, but what did Wayne Rooney get up to with the grannie?

Having reviewed today's newspapers, I see that David Sullivan was brought up in Hornchurch, which puts him in his youth on the East End border and thereby lends credibility to his claim to be a local boy (as if we really give a damn):

Peter, if Ian Dury could boast about being a cockney because he was raised in Upminster, but in truth was born in Harrow, Middlesex, I guess Sullivan can lay claim to being a Welsh cockney because he happens to live in Chipping Ongar, Essex. But David Gold was born in Stepney, East London, so there was at least a half-truth to David Sullivan's statement today to the BBC:

"... this is an important day for us. For 20 years, this is the club we wanted. The club is now back in the hands of East Enders, people who understand the community and its passion for the Hammers."

It may be difficult for someone for whom football can only mean Welsh rugby to comprehend the man, boy bubble blowing devotion to soccer let alone a soccer club. But if West Ham is important, and for the economic and social prosperity of London' East end it is, then Cardiff born David Sullivan is probably the right sort of person to pick up the reins and the future of the ethos that is West Ham.

At dinner with Karen Brady in December I asked her if she was prepared to drop some of her media career to be part of the Sullivan - Gold bid for the Hammers. No way she said that's behind me, one person in the family involved in football management is enough. It says something for the commitment of the new ownership team that Karen is back, albeit as deputy chairman.

Based on their philosophy at Birmingham this could be a serious test for the restoration of the 'community based' club successful at the highest level making the idea of undying support and community involvement something that even this Welshman can start to get his head around.

It is good, Richard. But click on the previous post button and read "Ian Dury’s biopic is the story of my life" (http://paulseaman.eu/2010/01/ian-durys-the-story-of-my-lif/) which Paul wrote a couple of weeks ago - January 7 and I marked down as a serious contender for one of the best pieces of 2010.

Brilliant piece of writing.

After a day of interspersing 2,500 word essays (too long) with 140 character tweets (...), this is just what I needed to read. A good, funny, journalistic rant. No hot air, no bubbles.
